Leftfield take it, with a very credible top 10 spot for the year. Our first big mover and shaker for a couple of months.
Mark gives his first 9. Congrats! Although….despite the 9, you share the ☹️ with Andy
Erol, your first 😁 since June!
Andy
Carl Cox - I can see a bit more competence than in the usual rave on stuff but it still rather overstays its welcome and I find it really hard to appreciate as an album rather than something you might listen to in da club 5.5
Leftfield - See above 5.5
NOFX - Fun bit of pop punk from Fat Mike and his pals 7
White Lung - More Canadian rock than Canadian indie pop but still waaay better than Nickleback 6.5
TotW - Is it Too Soon if Time is Relative?
Lou Reed - Wonderful stuff, one of the best storytelling albums this side of Mr Bruce Springsteen, although Lou's characters are all a bit more freaky 9
Guy
Carl Cox - a bit too technoey for my taste and it went on far too long. Couple of decent tunes in amongst the bleeps. Thank God we cut it off after disc 1 - 6
Leftfield - thought this was good. Lots of variety with some great guest contributions - not least from yer man from Fontaines DC - 7.5
NOFX - Sounded very dated. Saw that they formed in 1983. Not sure their sound has evolved at all. Lightweight stuff - 5.8
White Lung - Not bad although was one of those albums where the songs seem to merge together a bit. This has got some excellent reviews but I wasn't that impressed - 6.5
TotW - Full Way Round - Leftfield
Lou Reed - Superb album. Played the vinyl off this when I was a teenager. So many great tracks. A true classic - 9.3
Erol
Carl Cox - a bit monotonous and disappointing in the early stages but then he drops in an absolute pile-driver with World Gone Mad, the stand out moment of the album. 7.
Leftfield - after all these years, they are still able to produce top quality like this. Diverse, creative and thoroughly entertaining throughout. I loved it. 9
NOFX - rather manic American punk rock. Tough to listen to on my deaf aids (as Andy calls them!) but I reckon they would put on a fun gig in a dark sweaty basement. 6.2
White Lung - there are some good indie rock tunes buried in here but it’s let down by the endlessly manic drumming and over cluttered production. If they could just pare this back a bit it would be much better. 6.6
TOTW - Accumulator by Leftfield
Lou Reed - I know some of these songs but have never heard the whole album until now. Lovely to listen to, with expertly crafted lyrical storytelling. 8.5
Simon
Carl Cox: I'd have lapped this up in my clubbing days but it doesn't have the same impact when you're sat on the 7.45 to London Bridge - bit of a mixed bag, although the squelchy acid numbers towards the end are decent. 6.5
Leftfield: have some minor misgivings that it sounds a bit too 90's, but there's a lot to get stuck into and enjoy here - Accumulator in particular is a banger. 8
NOFX: there must be some people somewhere who find this stuff appealing but it irritated the hell out of me. 4.5
White Lung: more palatable than NOFX - better tunes and decent vocals - but the relentless drumming did get wearing after a while. 6
Lou Reed: was into the Velvets a bit in my younger days but have never previously listened to this - simple songs but pretty much timeless. 8
TotW: Leftfield - Accumulator
Mark
Carl Cox - crikey, he's 60 😱 Well this was a surprise, cracking set of techno from the great man, liked this a lot - 7
Leftfield - another stormer of an album from one of the great electronic outfits, played it loads this week, some real monsters on it, that opening track with the kitchen sink thrown in, all sirens and cowbells a go-go, wonderful - 9
NoFx - the punk pop guitars are ok, but the silly puerile lyrics are irritating and the Steven Hawking one, wtf - 4.5
White Lung - I got no enjoyment from this, all bashed out at the same relentless pace - 4
TOTW - Accumulator by Leftfield
Justin
Carl Cox - pure techno. Probably better in a club than with a morning coffee. 7
Leftfield - top tunes, no filler, overall great album 8
NoFx - I find this genre quite listenable but all the bands and songs do blur into one. 6.8
White Lung - listened to it twice but just no feelings bad or good. Just washed over me but on basis it didn't offend me 6
TOTW - Rapture 16 Leftfield
Lou Reed - a truly brilliant album. 3 all time classic songs but the remainder all still strong. A real timeless classic 9
Sam
Carl Cox : a bit patchy but decent sometimes. 6.5
Leftfield : obviously talented but it’s a bit abrasive at times . 6
Nofx : pop punk fun ! What the actual fuck the Stephen hawking one was god only knows , 6.9
White Lung : blistering rock ! This weeks winner . 7.4
Lou Reed : glam rock mastery with clever lyrics . 8.5
TOTW Hysteric by White Lung
Jim
Carl Cox 7.5
What a legend, probably my GOAT DJ. Smooth delicious techno followed by banging squelchy acid house. May not compare so well to the more varied electronica offerings we have heard but would have sounded great inside Space.
Leftfield 8.5
Fantastic stuff. Thought it was a nod to many of the legends at times - Prodigy at the start, Daft Punk on and off throughout and Orbital at the end . Was all in for a 9 but it just tails off on the last few (although I've not had many chances to listen uninterrupted so I reserve the right to go back and adjust) For sure their best offering since Leftism .
NOFX 5
Pretty lame punk pop. I like the genre, but their naff lyrics led me to think they were young upstarts not 30 year veterans. Jerk-off sock? Naff. Reminded me how good Green Day are.
White Lung 6
Yep, a bit one dimensional, but thankfully short and I quite liked that direction. Reminded me how good The Subways are.
TOTW Leftfield Full Way Round
Lou Reed 8
Don't think I've ever listened to this, and there are few beyond the most well known that are also tremendous.
Matt
Carl Cox: to my surprise I really enjoyed this. Super smooth house. 7.5
Leftfield: Again I surprised myself. A strong start and faded a little but some great varied tracks. 7.5
NOFX: Generic US shoutiness. 4.5
White Lung: Frantic, aggressive Canadian post-punk, but little variety. 5
TOTW: Leftfield - City of Synths
