W/e 18/11/22 - Christine and the Queens, Larkin Poe, Heather Frost, Fenella, Fleetwood Mac

Christine just nips it from Larkin Poe, who have the TOTW. Simon takes the šŸ˜, Erol the ā˜¹ļø, his 3rd in 8 weeks.

Jim

Larkin Poe 7

Some cracking blues rock tracks that would fit on a Black Keys album. Was less keen on the more typical Country and Western but overall pretty good.

Fenella 6

Some of it was so laid back it could be filed under the genre 'mindfulness', but when the bpm's were upped (relatively) it was quite pleasant chilled electronica

Christine and the Queens 5

Occasionally uplifting but mostly disjointed moaning that je ne comprenais pas

Heather trost 4

Went to make a note of my views a few hours after listening (twice) and realised I could remember absolutely none it. Not offensive is about the best I can offer

TOTW Larkin Poe - Bolt Cutter & The Family Name

Fleetwood Mac 9.5

Fantastic album, deservedly lauded . Go your own way is one of my all time favs . Enhanced by what was going on in the background.

Guy

Larkin Poe 6

Agree with Jim. The bluesy stuff was good the C&W less good. Didn't dislike this album but probably won't be spinning this again in the immediate future.

Fenella 5

Lordy. Not sure what this album is all about. It felt at points like an experimental demo tape and at others like a film soundtrack. There were one or two decent moments but they were think on the ground.

Christine and the Queens 7.5

I thought this was really good. Some quality tunes a few of which reminded me of Florence but there was variety too and his voice is good.

Heather Trost 4

Really was totally unmemorable. Just plain bland. 4.5

TOTW Christine and The Queens - Tu sais ce qu'il me faut

Fleetwood Mac 9

Really good album. So many amazing tunes on one album is a rarity. There are some that get a little shown up by the sheer quality of others but overall a great listen.

Erol

Larkin Poe 7.3

It seems many of us are in agreement on this. A few strong bluesy numbers but at times the album veers towards slightly corny country which I was less keen on. That said, I listened to it 3 times on loop over the weekend so I must have enjoyed it!

Fenella 4.5

Peculiar and too experimental for my liking. Not sure what this was all about or whether the producer actually had a plan when this was put together.

Christine and the Queens 7

Very French, unsurprisingly, and at times very cool. Some of the middle tracks are quirky but I can forgive that. The opening song is lovely and Combien de temps followed by Je te vois enfin is a great pairing. I can imagine listening to this in a swanky cocktail bar somewhere in les banlieues, avec un Gauloise dans le main.

Heather Trost 3

This was painful. Wafty, insubstantial and so uninteresting.

TOTW - Bad Spell by Larkin Poe

Fleetwood Mac 9. 5

One of my favourites, jammed packed with cracking 70s pop-rock classics. No wonder itā€™s one of the best selling albums of all time.

Andy

Larkin Poe - Smashing bit of southern rock, Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers would be proud of it. Only disappointment was finding out they weren't named after John Cusack and Nic Cage's characters from Con Air 8

Fenella - All a bit too experimental elctronica for me, could have done with more Jane Weaver input as with the last track 5.5

Christine and the Queens - There's nothing on here that grabs you quite like Tilted, although rien dire is close, an enjoyable hour of gender fluid gallic oddness with a hint of Tegan and Sara nonetheless 7

Heather Trost - Not as poppy as I'd hoped but I quite enjoyed some of this, not all of it though, Black is the Night was a right dirge. Occasionally sounds like Julie Cruise, which is fine by me 5.5

TotW - Might As Well Be Me from Larkin Poe

Fleetwood Mac - There's a reason this still shifts units now, classic by definition and with plenty of back story to enjoy 9

Sam

Larkin Poe: I was more gutted they werenā€™t named after Philip Larkin and Edgar Allen Poe. Fabulous country rock , they obv love The Black Crowes but there ainā€™t nothing wrong with that . Classy stuff . 8.2

Fenella : ha , ha , ha what a joke : 3

Christine and the Queens : Je Tā€™aime le pop music francaise, Christine et une chanteuse tres Bon . Mon coueur et mes oreilles sont contente ā€¦ 7.5

Heather Trost : surprisingly perky and got my foot tapping .Bit wafty at times . 6.8

Fleetwood Mac : bursting with bangers , beautifully made . 9

TOTW : Bolt Cutters and the family name : Larkin Poe

Simon

Larkin Poe: quite liked some of the bigger bluesy numbers but overall it's not really my thing. 6.5

Fenella: always had a soft spot for this kind of offbeat electronica - and I've a lot of time for Jane Weaver - and second time round this certainly hit the mark. 7.5

Christine & the Queens: not up to the standard of the fantastic LaVita Nuova EP, but still captivating enough even though I haven't got the foggiest what he is singing about. 8

Heather Trost: like the folky electronica style but most of it is far too slow and unfortunately her voice just isn't that good - The Devil Never Sleeps is great though. 6

Fleetwood Mac: no arguing that it's a classic, but can't say there's a great deal here that appeals to me. 6.5

TotW: Heather Trost - The Devil Never Sleeps

Justin

Larkin Poe I concur with everyone else's comments. 6.4

Fenella - I only concur with Simon. I thought this was a great album. 7.2

Christine and the Queens - I just don't really like his voice so I struggle with his albums. 6

Heather Trost liked some of the songs but some too slow and dirgy. 6.1

Fleetwood Mac some classic but overall prefer tango in the night 6.9

Totw Fenella Instituts metaphyisque

Mark

Larkin Poe - there have been so many of these blues rock duos over the years it's hard to be objective, this is absolutely nothing new or original whatsoever, but mostly fairly enjoyable until it goes a bit naff country - 6

Fenella - weird but nice, all very low key understated electronica which made for a pleasant Sunday morning brekkie vibe for me, although I didn't hear Jane Weaver enough considering it looks like a full collaboration - 6.5

Christine & The Queens - I really liked this, groovy Gallic synth pop with plenty of TOTW contenders, got better with each listening - 7.5

Heather Trost - not dissimilar to Fenella in places, this had the potential to be really good but some tracks just didn't take off - 6.5

TOTW - Je Te Vois Enfin by Christine & The Queens

Matt

Larkin Poe - thoroughly enjoyable modern bluegrass. 7

Fenella - a little too understated for me, it felt that one track slid into another. 5

Christine & the Queens - sophisticated and cool; the audio equivalent of a Gauloise on an exchange trip. 6.7

Heather Trost - too twee for me. 5
