W/e 26/08/22 - Kid Kapichi, Cleopatrick, Tigercub, The Chats, Guns n' Roses

Our highest scoring week since April (the Jack White , Wet Leg week), 2nd highest of the year. Festival anticipation was running high

And one of the tightest races. Half a point between the 4. Tigercub take it by a whisker, just outside the 2022 top 20

Sam takes the 😀 with your 2nd highest ever week, again behind the JW week

Erol you take the😀 due to your lack of love for yob rock (great new term MKE)

No muti votes for TOTW but plenty of love shown for that GTR

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Justin

Kid kapachi - a few too loud but overall good rock and some better than usual lyrics 6.9

The Chats - the type of thing I like live but would not listen to that much at home. Very Jet like. 6.7

Cleopatrick - very Royal blood esque. Good heavy. 7.2

Tigercub - musesque. Maybe over did the slow start then go loud approach but rocking album 7.1

Guy

Kid Kipachi - Decent stuff. Worth a listen at the fest. As Justine said, the lyrics are pretty good. 6.9

The Chats - I'm not usually as big a fan of the shouty stuff as some of you guys but this was good fun. Lyrics are funny and I like his Aussie drawl 6.8

Cleopatrick - This was a bit too heavy for me. Sounded like a lot of those American Rock bands 6.0

Tigercub - There are similarities to Muse definitely. Also Kasabian. Overall I liked it better than both of those though. I'll be watching this lot. 7.2

Guns n' Roses - A really good album and there are the obvious nailed-on bangers. Not right in my sweet spot so only a 8.5

Jim

Kid Kapachi 6.5

Suffered a bit from being in the week with similar rock offerings and for me came 3rd in that mini league. Not unpleasant but not stand out as lacked a little variety

The Chats 7

Great fun, if perhaps not quite up with Amy and her Sniffers, but they’ve got some kahunas. 6L GTR made me laugh

Cleopatrick 7.5

They and Tiger cub were very similar, and have both listened to a lot of Royal Blood me thinks. But they pulled this off with some aplomb. Great Lakes and Good Grief were excellent.

Tigercub 8

Loved this. As said, thought closer to RB than Muse, but for sure some influence of the Devon chaps. Intense and energetic with some funk to it. Slight drop off in the middle but the start and end were great. Handful of TOTW contenders.

TOTW The Drake, Cleopatick just edging out Tigercub Blue Mist in my Head

Guns 'n Roses 9.5

Awesome. I was into nothing like this when it came out, but I remember getting so caught up in it. The biggies are world beaters and still sound amazing, One of the best opening 30 seconds of any album. If there is a downside it's that the other tracks do pale a little next to the big 3.

Andy

Kid Kapachi - A really good example of the shouty punk genre with some social comment to boot 7.5

The Chats - More punk but as mentioned when Bon Scott type aussie pub vocals are involved it's much more up my street, plus they deal with the cost of living crisis on The Price of Smokes 7

Cleopatrick - Despite not being a male Cleopatra (coming atcha!) tribute act this 21 pilots-esque album was very enjoyable 7

Tigercub - Poor man's Muse but for once the poor man's prefix works in their favour as they aren't nearly as annoying as the group they're imitating 6

TotW - Hope's a Never Ending Funeral

Guns n Roses - Perfect. You could say the rapiness hasn't aged well but it was a bit rough at the time so not sure that applies. The greatest debut album of all time 10

Sam

Kid Kapichi: Fairly good but very Slaves meets Jamie T . 7

The Chats : nothing new here , but who cares ? Fucking fantastic. 8.5

Cleopatrick : great guitars , very dark but me like . 8

Tigercub: didn’t hear much Muse just a solid rock band .

TOTW Stop Beating on my heart ( like a bass drum ) by Tigercub

GunsnRoses: Starts like a rocket and doesn’t stop . My faves are : My Michelle and Mr Brownstone . Blew my fucking socks off at Henley College 9

Mark

Kid Kapichi - just edged the three way quiet/loud off this week, will try and catch them at the festival - 7

The Chats - I'm a sucker for this kind of feral antipodean yob rock and so I loved this. Thought all this week's selections were playing the festival so disappointed to find out we won't be getting treated to the likes of Boggo Breakout and I've Been Drunk In Every Pub in Brisbane this weekend - 7.5

Cleopatrick - started off promisingly and I thought it would be the best of this week's noisenik bunch, but then it started to all get a bit too manic and borderline unlistenable - 5

Tigercub - very Musey, as most others have noted, but when they tone down the histrionics there's some decent stuff in here - 6.5

TOTW - 6 Litre GTR by The Chats

Simon

Kid Kapachi: interestingly it reminded me of some of Blur's livelier moments, particularly the vocals - quite an engaging listen. 7

Chats: entertaining enough while it lasted, but would hold much interest beyond a couple of spins. 6.5

Cleopatrick: not the kind of thing I would normally listen to, but even then it was all very mediocre. 5.5

Tigercub: bit pompous round the edges, but otherwise decent enough without being anything to write home about. 6.8

Guns n' Roses: not a band I've ever had any interest in, although I can understand the appeal (and I've always quite liked Sweet Child O'Mine). 7

Erol

Kid Kapachi - a bit too punky for me and some of their lyrics (eg on Violence and Thugs) are a tad disturbing. But some of their less pumped-up tracks are decent enough. 5.8

The Chats - shouty, dissonant Aussie noise. What a racket. 4

Cleopatrick - a bit heavy and directionless at times, but a good solid rock album nonetheless. Tiger Club bear more similarity to Royal Blood than this bunch. 6.9

Tiger club - I like Royal Blood and Muse, ergo I like this band. For the most part, great stuff, apart from the whistling song in the middle. I’d like to hear more from them. 7.5

TOTW - Sleepwalker by Tiger Club

Guns ‘n’ Roses - this takes me back to my sixth form. Some utter classic rock tunes here (Sweet Child of Mine etc) but the album does sound a bit dated at times. Also, there are one or two weak-link filler tunes on this. 8.5

Matt

I've awarded scores taking into account the live performances of the three asterisked bands. I realise it's not a level playing field but if the the Chats feel strongly they can appeal. On average live performances got an extra point, which just goes to show live music is generally better.

Kid Kapachi * 7.5 Loved the energy, more rounded live

The Chats 6.5 some great tracks (6l GTR) and less angry than Amyl but running the risk of being a sweary, sunburned Chas n Dave (+1)

Cleopatrick * 6.8 bit intense for a side tent but enjoyable enough

Tigercub * 7 less Musey live, so a good thing
